The security of devices and industrial automation networks has always been a priority for the UBIQUITY platform. In this regard, we would like to inform you that the TLS 1.0 security protocol used in Runtime versions 1.0 to 7.9 is now considered insecure. Therefore, we recommend that you upgrade to TLS 1.2+, which is implemented in Runtime 8.0 and later.
To ensure that the entire platform is protected, we launched a campaign with UBIQUITY 14 to raise awareness of the importance of updating Runtime versions so starting in 2025, Runtime versions lower than 3 will be considered obsolete and will no longer be able to connect to our servers. Subsequently, Runtime versions lower than 8 will also be declared obsolete.
In the first phase, the Control Center desktop application will display a popup message indicating the presence of devices with Runtime versions lower than 3 that need to be updated, while UBIQUITY Manager will display a warning icon on folders and obsolete devices.
Below are some helpful hints to assist you with this Runtime update process:
systems running Windows XP (updated), before proceeding with the UBIQUITY Runtime update, it is required that the system be updated to Windows Service Pack 3. Afterwards, temporarily using an alternative remote access solution (such as TeamViewer), we suggest manually uninstalling first the bridge (used by the old UBIQUITY Runtime) and then the old Runtime version. After these steps you can install the latest released version of the UBIQUITY Runtime for XP: 13.1.61
on embedded systems such as WinCE-based HMIs and RK1x routers, it may be necessary to update the entire image or the System Manager software component. We recommend upgrading these systems progressively and making sure, at least in the first few upgrades, that the devices are manned locally so that manual intervention can be taken as alternative remote access systems are not readily available.
on systems running Windows Vista, Windows 7, and newer operating systems, although it is always recommended to keep the operating system up-to-date, there are no special requirements to do so, and therefore the latest available version of Runtime can be installed via remote update (or manually). The advice, however, is to proceed progressively with the Runtime upgrade, temporarily installing an alternative remote access solution (such as TeamViewer) in case the remote update fails.
We want to help you keep your devices and networks secure!
For this reason, we strongly recommend that you keep your Runtimes up to date: this will allow you to take advantage of the latest security updates and features as they are released. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our Software Technical Support.
